Abstract
Per DILA A-entry for 子益 and Lín Xīyì’s preface: Zǐyì (zì Jiànguān 劍關, after his native Jiànzhōu 劍州 in Shǔ) was dharma-heir of Wújùn Shīfàn. Lín Xīyì’s preface records a personal meeting (“yǐchǒu [1265], Jiànguān came into Fújiàn, to Yùróng [Fúzhōu]”) and describes him as physically imposing, eloquent, combining the “southern clarity” of Chán expression with the “Western [= Shǔ] vigour.” He held three successive abbacies, ending at Fúzhōu Chángqìng from 1265, where he died two years later. The yǔlù was printed at Yíshān after his death; Lín’s preface was added to a second circulation c. 1270 when the master’s dharma-heir Chóngzé 崇澤 (“sent it to me via Zéxiōng [= Chóngzé] in gēngwǔ [1270] autumn”). Lín regrets that “interview-exchanges, verses, and encomiums” are incomplete — whether through transmission loss or the master’s own neglect.
