Yǔshān héshàng yǔlù 雨山和尚語錄
Recorded Sayings of Master Yǔ-shān by 上思 (說)
Massive twenty-juan yǔlù of Yǔshān Shàngsī 上思 雨山上思 (1630 – 1688-03-26, age 59, sēnglà 39), LínjìYángqí dharma-heir of Jùbó Jìhéng 巨渤濟恒 (1605–1666). Native of Tàizhōu 泰州 (Jiāngsū), lay surname Yú 於. The yǔlù is one of the largest single-author LínjìYángqí compilations in the Jiāxīng Canon, comparable to KR6q0583 (20 juan, Cáodòng) and surpassing most other J40 entries. Buried at Tiānníngsì 天寧寺 northwest corner.
The 20-juan extent reflects Shàngsī’s career as one of the most active Yángzhōu / Lóngshū / Lúshān LínjìYángqí abbatial circuits — particularly his six recurrent residencies at Wéiyáng Tiānníngsì 維揚天寧禪寺 (Yángzhōu, Wéiyáng being the city’s archaic name) documented separately in juans 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, and 14 — making Tiānníng his principal stable home with multiple departures and returns. notBefore = 1668 (post-Jì-héng-1666-death abbacy onset); notAfter = 1690 (post-1688-death printing). Other points of interest
The recurrent Yángzhōu Tiānníngsì abbacy is one of the most stable institutional records in J40 — Tiānníngsì 天寧寺 was a major imperial-supported temple in the lower Yangtze cultural-economic capital of Yángzhōu, and Shàngsī’s six-time residency over the 1668–1688 period with multiple side-abbacies elsewhere indicates a “movable abbacy” patronage pattern characteristic of late-Kāngxī LínjìYángqí elite Buddhism.
