Guānyīn cílín jí 觀音慈林集
Anthology of the Compassionate Forest of Avalokiteśvara
compiled by 弘贊 (Hóngzàn / Zàishēn 在犙, 1612–1686, 輯)
About the work
A 3-juan early-Qīng anthology of materials relating to the cult of Avalokiteśvara (Guān-yīn 觀音 / Guān-shì-yīn 觀世音), compiled by the Cáo-dòng vinaya-master Zài-shēn Hóng-zàn 在犙弘贊 (1612–1686) at his residence on Dǐng-hú-shān 鼎湖山 in Guǎngdōng. The work is conceived as a comprehensive textual and biographical resource for Avalokiteśvara devotion, gathering in three juan (1) the foundational sūtra-passages on Avalokiteśvara from across the Chinese Buddhist canon, (2) historical gǎn-yìng miracle-tales of Avalokiteśvara’s intervention, and (3) Avalokiteśvara-related liturgical and devotional materials. The “compassionate forest” (cí-lín 慈林) of the title refers both to the wide range of canonical and devotional sources gathered and to Avalokiteśvara’s own quality as the embodiment of mahā-karuṇā. Transmitted in the Xù-zàng-jīng as X1644.
Prefaces
The work’s table of contents organises the material under two main rubrics — Upper Juan: the sūtras (上卷諸經) and Middle and Lower Juan: the miracle tales (中下卷感應傳) — with a brief framing preface that situates Avalokiteśvara within the wider Mahāyāna soteriological scheme.
Abstract
The work is structured into three juan as follows:
-
Upper Juan — the canonical sūtras: a comprehensive listing of the principal Chinese Buddhist canonical texts treating Avalokiteśvara, with extracts of the foundational passages from each:
- The 《觀音普門品玄義》 Guān-yīn pǔ-mén pǐn xuán-yì of Zhì-yǐ 智顗 (Tiāntái commentary on the Lotus-Avalokiteśvara chapter).
- The 《悲華經》 Bēi-huá jīng (the Karuṇā-puṇḍarīka-sūtra).
- The 《觀音勢至授記經》 Guānyīn Shìzhì shòujì jīng.
- The 《大悲陀羅尼經》 Dàbēi tuóluóní jīng.
- The Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Pǔ-mén pǐn itself.
- The 《大佛頂首楞嚴經》 Shǒu-léng-yán jīng’s Avalokiteśvara passage (the famous “24 sense-faculty practitioners’ exposition culminating in Avalokiteśvara’s yuán-tōng through érgēn / hearing”).
- And further sūtras with substantial Avalokiteśvara content.
-
Middle Juan — gǎn-yìng tales: historical miracle-tales of Avalokiteśvara’s compassionate intervention, drawn from the entire Chinese Buddhist tradition from the Six Dynasties through the late Míng. Major sources include the early Guān-yīn yìng-yàn anthologies by Fù Liàng 傅亮 (374–426), Zhāng Yǎn 張演 (5th c.), and Lù Gǎo 陸杲 (459–532) — the foundational Six Dynasties Avalokiteśvara-miracle anthologies; together with later Tang, Sòng, and Míng miracle-tales drawn from the standard gāo-sēng zhuàn tradition, the 《冥報記》 Míng-bào jì, the 《法苑珠林》 KR6s0002 Fǎ-yuàn zhū-lín, and contemporary materials.
-
Lower Juan — devotional and liturgical material: Avalokiteśvara zàn 贊 (eulogies), vow-inscriptions, icon-dedicatory pieces, and selections of late-Míng / early-Qīng devotional poetry and prose addressed to Avalokiteśvara.
The work is the most comprehensive single-volume Avalokiteśvara devotional handbook of the early Qīng period, and supplied a model for subsequent late-imperial Avalokiteśvara anthologies. It is also a major source for the recovery of the early Six Dynasties Avalokiteśvara-miracle anthologies of Fù Liàng, Zhāng Yǎn, and Lù Gǎo, which survive only fragmentarily in their original form but are preserved in substantial extract in Hóng-zàn’s compilation.
The dating bracket — 1640 to 1686 — covers Hóngzàn’s productive period; together with the 《兜率龜鏡集》 KR6r0165 (Maitreya devotion) and the 《六道集》 KR6r0167 (the Six Realms moral-pedagogical anthology), the Guānyīn cílín jí forms the central panel of Hóngzàn’s three-fold devotional anthological project.
