A fragmentary Tang-period Buddhist canonical-bibliographic work, surviving in juan 3 through juan 20 only — preserved in the Jīncáng (Zhàochéng Jīncáng) collection at A97 no. 1276. The work is by Xuányì 玄逸 (otherwise unattested), evidently a Tang-period canonical bibliographer of the post-Kāiyuánlù generation. The work supplements or expands on Zhìshēng’s Kāiyuán shìjiào lù (KR6s0093) with broader topical / organizational (“guǎngpǐn” 廣品 = “broad sections”) and sequential-chapter (“lìzhāng” 歷章) treatment of the canonical material.

The text has no preserved auto-preface (the lost juan 1–2 likely contained the prefatory matter). The body of the surviving juan 3–20 provides the systematic canonical-bibliographic treatment.

Abstract

Authorship and date: composed by Xuányì 玄逸 in the post-Kāi-yuán-lù period (after 730 — the work’s title’s reference to Kāiyuánshìjiào identifies it as post-Zhì-shēng — and likely before the Yuánzhào Zhēnyuán xīndìng shìjiào mùlù of 800 KR6s0097 which would naturally have superseded it). A defensible bracket: 730–770. notBefore = 730, notAfter = 770. Catalog dynasty 唐.

The work’s surviving fragments (juan 3–20) provide a substantial bibliographic-organizational extension of the Zhìshēng Kāiyuánlù tradition, with particular attention to “broad-section” and “sequential-chapter” treatment. The fragmentary state precludes detailed reconstruction of the original scope.

The work is one of the lesser-known but documented members of the Tang post-Kāiyuánlù canonical-bibliographic supplements that proliferated during the late-8th century before the Yuánzhào Zhēnyuánlù consolidation of 800. Its preservation only in the Zhàochéng Jīncáng (the rare LiáoJīnYuán transition canon-printing) reflects its loss from the mainstream canonical transmission and its recovery only through the late-medieval Jīncáng’s preservation.

The work’s preservation only via the Zhào-chéng Jīn-cáng (the rare Liáo-Jīn-period canon-printing produced at Zhào-chéng-xiàn 趙城縣 in Shānxī under Jīn imperial sponsorship in 1149–1173) makes it one of the principal fragmentary recovery-treasures of late-imperial Chinese Buddhist canonical-bibliographic history. The Jīn-cáng’s role in preserving works lost from the mainstream canonical transmission parallels the Goryeo Tripiṭaka’s role for Liáo-canon transmissions.
