The Catalog of Newly-Sought Sage-Teaching from Tang by 圓仁 (撰)

About the work

A single-juan Japanese Tang-pilgrim importation catalog, the third of Ennin’s 圓仁 (794–864) four catalogs (cf. KR6s0111KR6s0112, KR6s0114). This is the comprehensive importation catalog produced upon Ennin’s final return to Japan in 847 CE after his nine-year Tang stay, documenting the totality of materials brought back. Preserved at T55 no. 2167.

Abstract

Authorship and date: composed by Ennin in 847 upon his return from his 838–847 Tang study mission. notBefore = 847, notAfter = 847. Catalog dynasty 日本.

The catalog documents the largest and most consequential of the Heian nittō hakke importations — the totality of Ennin’s Tang acquisitions. Ennin’s Tang study spanned Wǔ-tái-shān (the Mañjuśrī sacred mountain), Cháng’ān (the Tang capital), and other major Tang Buddhist centers, and his importation included substantial Tendai, Esoteric, and devotional materials — providing the foundation for the post-Saichō Tendai institutional consolidation that Ennin himself led after his return.

See KR6s0111 for principal substantive treatment of Ennin and his importation project.
