Zhū āshélí zhēnyán mìjiào bùlèi zǒnglù 諸阿闍梨真言密教部類總錄

The General Catalog of the Mantra Esoteric Teaching Sections by Various Ācāryas by 安然 (集), = Annen 安然 (841–915?)

About the work

A two-juan Heian-era Japanese Tendai-Esoteric (Taimitsu) bibliographic compendium by Annen 安然 (Japanese Annen, 841–915?) — the principal late-9th-century systematizer of Japanese Tendai-Esoteric (Taimitsu 台密) doctrine and bibliography. The work organizes Esoteric (zhēnyán mìjiào 真言密教 = mantra-esoteric-teaching) canonical materials by ācārya (āshélí 阿闍梨, the Esoteric “preceptor”-lineage transmitter) — making it both a bibliographic catalog and a documentary witness to the Tang Esoteric lineage transmissions that the nittō hakke had brought to Japan. Preserved at T55 no. 2176. notBefore = 885, notAfter = 902 (Annen’s principal scholarly productivity period). Catalog dynasty 日本.

The work is one of the most important organizational (rather than merely inventory-bibliographic) documents of the post-nittō-hakke Heian Esoteric establishment — making the lineage-transmission structure of Esoteric Buddhism explicit through its catalog organization.
