Jīngāngjiè cìdì shēngqǐ 金剛界次第生起

Structural Genesis of the Vajradhātu Liturgical Sequence by 最圓

About the work

A single-fascicle structural-analytical exposition of the Vajradhātu 金剛界 (Vajra-realm) liturgical sequence, by Saien 最圓 (1048–1102), Tendai esoteric master of the Kawa-ryū lineage. The work is the Vajradhātu counterpart to Kakuchō’s Garbhadhātu shōki (KR6t0103) and develops the same analytical framework.

Abstract

Authorship. The catalog meta attributes the work to Saien 最圓. The text opens directly without a colophon, stating the work’s analytical premise:

Now, when the Tathāgata established his teaching, there must be a sequence. The classifications in the various sūtras into chapters are not without reason. Even today, when we practice the mantra method, there must be a sequence. The intention of the sequence — how could it lack a structural-genesis? Therefore, I privately set this down for the essentials of recitation-discipline.

Date. Within Saien’s lifespan (1048–1102 CE).

Content. The work proceeds step-by-step through the Vajradhātu sequence, beginning with the preparatory contemplations (fángzhōng hùjìng, guānniàn 房中護淨觀念 — chamber-purification and contemplation), the entry into the practice hall with ground-purification (淨地) followed by body-purification (淨身), and the opening contemplation of the Buddhas filling all space (觀於遍虚空佛). Each procedural step is explained by its genetic rationale: if X were not done, then Y would not be possible, framing the liturgical sequence as a logically necessary causal chain rather than an arbitrary ritual order.

The work is part of the canonical mid-Heian Yokawa / Kawa-ryū Taimitsu literature on procedural analysis. It is short (one fascicle) but tightly argued, and was studied alongside Kakuchō’s Garbhadhātu shōki as a paired pedagogical introduction to the two principal Tendai esoteric liturgies.

In Taishō this work appears at T75n2406A; the next entry (T75n2406B) is the anonymous Jǐndā jīngāngjiè yíwèn zǒnglái shí tiáo (KR6t0106), a ten-point Q&A on Vajradhātu liturgical doubts, treated as an editorial appendix to Saien’s shōki.
