A single-fascicle disciple’s record of master Ryōō’s teaching on Tendai esoteric kanjō procedure — explicitly headed “Ryōō’s teaching” 了翁御談 at the top of the text. The work is a kuden document of medieval Tendai-esoteric consecration practice.
Abstract
Authorship. The work is presented as a disciple’s record of Ryōō’s 了翁 (13th-c.) oral teaching. The disciple is not named in the Taishō text; the genre is the jiànwén 見聞 (“what I have heard and seen”) — a record kept by a personal disciple of a master’s kuden on specific topics.
Date. Within the 13th century, in Ryōō’s lifetime.
Content. The mokuroku lists the topics under the Garbhadhātu 胎 heading:
- 灌頂梵語事 — On the Sanskrit term for kanjō (i.e., the Sanskrit abhiṣeka / abhi-seca, and its semantic field).
- 七日作壇事 — On the seven-day altar-construction sequence.
- 八色幡事 — On the eight-color banner arrangement (matching that prescribed in KR6t0107 Suíyào jì).
- 十二天事 — On the Twelve Devas (the protective deities of the eight directions plus heaven and earth).

For each topic, Ryōō’s kuden is recorded — the etymological-doctrinal interpretation, the procedural-ritual practice, the kuden variants from other Taimitsu sub-lineages, and Ryōō’s own master-lineage’s settled position. The work is short but doctrinally and procedurally compact, and provides important supplementary witness for the medieval Tendai-esoteric kanjō tradition.
Significance. The Guàndǐng sī jiànwén is one of many shorter kuden-record fascicles preserved in the Tendai-esoteric section of Taishō. Such works are key supplementary documents to the major encyclopedic compendia (KR6t0108, KR6t0109, KR6t0110, KR6t0114), providing the specific master-disciple transmission moment that the compendia summarize and systematize.
