Mìzōng jiàoxiàng chāo 祕宗教相鈔
Compendium on the Doctrinal Aspect of the Esoteric School by 重譽 (撰)
About the work
A ten-fascicle doctrinal-disputation compendium of the principal kemmitsu questions of medieval Shingon, organized as forty-eight topical decisions (tíjué 題決). The work is the principal scholastic-systematic statement of mid-late-Heian Shingon doctrinal-disputational consolidation by Chōyo 重譽.
Abstract
Authorship. Chōyo. The subtitle of the opening fascicle states explicitly: “Concerning the Esoteric School’s expounded matters, we hereby probe forty-eight topical decisions, the doubts within them.” (就祕密宗所説且探四十八條題決其中疑慮)
Date. Within Chōyo’s career, conventionally 12th century.
Content. The work is organized as forty-eight topical decisions, each treating one principal doctrinal-disputational question of the medieval Shingon tradition. The opening topics:
- 大日經所説三瑜祇行料簡第一 — The expounded three-yogic practice of the Mahāvairocanasūtra: ascertainment, no. 1. (with the marginal note: “this gate ends with question-and-answer further ascertaining the abolition / establishment of [stages 8] one-path-unconditioned and [stage 9] ultimate no-own-nature, together with the practitioner’s transition-from-apparent-to-esoteric stage-division”).
- 大日經三瑜祇行顯密料簡第二 — The Mahāvairocanasūtra’s three-yogic practice: apparent-esoteric ascertainment, no. 2.
- 百六十心本惑唯取五鈍簡五利第三 — The 160-mind fundamental delusions: taking only the five sluggish [delusions] and rejecting the five sharp, no. 3.
- (proceeding through to topic 48).
Each topic is treated in detailed Q&A format with extensive citation of canonical sources, Mahāvairocana-sūtra and Vajraśekhara-sūtra passages, Yixing’s Yìshì, Kūkai’s foundational treatises, and the medieval sub-commentaries of Saisen and others. The topical organization is non-arbitrary: it traces the progression of kemmitsu doctrinal articulation from the Mahāvairocana-sūtra foundational doctrines through the contested stage-progression questions, to the culminating sokushinjōbutsu and kanjō topics.
Significance. The Mìzōng jiàoxiàng chāo is one of the principal mid-late-Heian Shingon scholastic-disputational compendia, complementing Saisen’s line-by-line sub-commentary corpus. The forty-eight-topic organization established a canonical question-set that subsequent medieval Shingon scholastic literature continued to address. The work is studied alongside Saisen’s sub-commentaries in the medieval and Edo Shingon scholastic curriculum.
