About the work

A single-fascicle kuden 口訣 (kuketsu) compiled by Shinzei 眞濟 (800–860), Kūkai’s senior disciple and the first abbot of Takao-san-ji 高雄山寺 (later renamed Jingo-ji 神護寺). The work records Shinzei’s transcriptions of the oral instructions received directly from Kūkai on a wide spectrum of Shingon ritual and doctrinal topics — bath-house procedures, lavatory hygiene, prostration etiquette, almsbowl ritual, the doctrinal explanations of the six offerings and four offerings, the four / five contemplation methods, beads-of-recitation procedure, and many more. It is the principal companion to KR6t0171 Hinoki-no-o kuden by Jitsue, and together with that work forms the earliest documentary corpus of Kūkai’s direct oral teaching.

Abstract

Authorship and dating: the colophon explicitly states “Recorded based on the oral decisions of Kōbō Daishi [Kūkai]; the original autograph draft is in the Kezō-in 華藏院 scripture repository” (依弘法大師口決記之眞筆草本在華藏院經藏). The composition window is 821–860, between Kūkai’s full establishment of the Takao-san-ji esoteric centre and Shinzei’s death. A later copyist’s note dates the present transmission to Ninnan 2 (1167), 3rd month, 13th day, copied at the Rishu-in 理趣院.

Doctrinal content: the table of contents lists over 40 distinct ritual and doctrinal topics, organized in a sequence that follows the practitioner’s daily monastic rhythm — bath, latrine, ablutions, prostrations, almsbowl meal, offering procedure, doctrinal-meditative content — culminating in advanced abhiṣeka-stage topics including the four-vs-five family contemplation (sì-zhǒng wǔ-zhǒng liǎng-bù xiū-fǎ sè-fǎ chā-bié yì 四種五種兩部修法色法差別義), the four bodhisattva-aspects (sì-zhǒng sà-duǒ yì 四種薩埵義 — the four Vajrasattva configurations), the Pañca-Buddha seating arrangement (wǔ-fó suǒ-zuò yì 五佛所坐義), and an extended set of (義 — doctrinal positions) on matters such as: “the meaning of kalpa in its three senses” (jié-bō sān-yì 劫波三義), “why the exoteric Buddha-fruits cannot enter the Mantra Gate” (yú-jiào fó-guǒ wèi rù zhēn-yán mén yì 餘教佛果未入眞言門義), “the meaning of Mahā-īśvara” (大自在義), “Buddha-attainment within three kalpas” (三劫成佛義), the comparative philological analysis of Buddha and bodhisattva names in Sanskrit (佛菩薩梵語義), the identity-or-difference of the Five Vehicles (五乘一異義), and the comparative survey of Sanskrit and Chinese script-types (梵漢文字種類義).

The breadth of topics — and especially the philological-Sanskrit material — makes the work an invaluable witness to the kind of teaching Kūkai actually delivered to his Takao-san-ji circle in the 820s–830s. The internal uragaki (verso-notes) further indicate that the text functioned as a working notebook of Shinzei’s, with annotations made over decades.

Other points of interest

The work is the principal textual witness to Shinzei’s specific contributions to Shingon scholarship: where Jitsue specialised in the ritual procedure proper (the kanjō and homa methods), Shinzei evidently took the lead in the doctrinal-philological dimension — Sanskrit script, name-etymology, the 義 analyses. This is consistent with Shinzei’s reputation as the foremost early-Heian Sanskritist of the Shingon school, who compiled the now-lost Shōryōshū 性靈集 of Kūkai’s writings.
