About the work
A short, intensely polemical Shingon text-critical treatise in thirteen articles (十三條) by the early-Edo Daigo Sanbō-in scholar 恭畏 Kyō’i, composed and transmitted on Kan’ei 6 (1629), 9th month at the conclusion of his teaching to his disciple Gyōshin 堯辰. The work identifies, by name, thirteen forged or pseudepigraphic manuscripts circulating within the Shingon transmission, exposing their internal inconsistencies and the bōryū 傍流 (collateral-lineage) sub-schools that propagate them. The author signs himself Kongōshō hōshi Kyō’i 金剛生法子恭畏 (“the Vajra-Begotten dharma-son Kyō’i”).
Abstract
Dating and authorship: explicitly dated by colophon to Kan’ei 6 (1629), 9th month, auspicious day (寛永六年九月吉日), and signed Kongōshō hōshi Kyō’i. The text is therefore an early-Edo (early Tokugawa) Daigo Sanbō-in 醍醐三寶院 forensic document.
Method: the author proceeds by forensic-philological comparison. For each suspect manuscript he sets out (a) the alleged title and ascription, (b) the colophon dates, (c) the genealogy (kechi-myaku 嫡嫡相承血脈) that the document presupposes, and (d) the historical-chronological impossibilities or genealogical contradictions that establish the forgery. Several of his arguments rely on the 官位記 records of monastic appointments (e.g., that Gihan 義範 had not yet been appointed gon-shōsōzu 權少僧都 at the date claimed in a forged inshin 印信 of Ōtoku 3 / 1086; that Kenshin 憲深 was only six years old at the date of a colophon ascribed to him in Kenkyū 8 / 1197), thereby exposing the colophons as fabricated.
Suspect manuscripts catalogued and rejected: the Sanchi-shū 三旰集 (alleged compilation of the kuketsu 口決 of Gihan, Hanshun 範俊, and Jōken 定賢, but in fact a fabrication by Jōi 定位); the Sanzen-ji 三千事; the Hōshittadaranikyō 寶悉陀羅尼經 (a spurious sūtra allegedly excavated by Kakuzen Ajari 覺禪阿闍梨 from a stone-cell at Ōmuro); the Gashun-no-koto 我夋之事 (also a Jōi forgery); the Sanbō-in Kanjōdō shizu 三寶院灌頂堂指圖; the Rokugatsu-shō 六月抄 and Yaketsu yosa 野決餘砂 (forged by the Sakamitsu-jō-bō 坂密上房); the Bekki 別記 or Eiryaku-shō 永暦抄 (Jōi-forged, propagated by Monkan 文觀); the Sekishitsu 石室; the Jinhi-kuketsu 深祕口決; the Zatsu-hiki 雜祕記 of Tokai 道快; the Daigo Sanbō-in dai-ji 醍醐三寶院大事 ascribed to Kenshin; the Myōkaku-shin-ji saimon 妙覺心地祭文; and the Chōninshō kuketsu 長人生口決 of Jisshō 實勝 — among others (the Daigo Rokugatsu-shō, Honji-ge, Kanjō-saihi-ketsu, Riteizu, Ono daiji, Henkuchi-shō Suketsu etc.) listed in a secondary appendix as “疑書” (works of dubious provenance).
Significance: the Gisho-ron is a rare and substantial monument of Edo-period internal Shingon text-criticism — an exercise in genealogical and chronological rigor applied by the orthodox Daigo Sanbō-in tradition against the proliferation of forged transmission documents in the late-medieval period. It is one of the principal sources for the history of Shingon forgeries and for the reconstruction of which alleged Kenshin and Jōken writings are authentic.
