Topical-Headings to the Great Chart of the Doctrinal Gates of the Pure Land by 行觀 Gyōkan (撰)

About the work

A single-fascicle Seizan-school catechetical primer by Gyōkan 行觀 (the Japanese Pure-Land monk, not the Chinese Chán master of the same name), structurally functioning as the gloss-edition / explanatory key (meimoku) to the parallel-genre KR6t0344 Jōdoshū hōmon dai-zu by 覺融 Kakuyū. The work expands on the hairyū-bō-shō-jo (廢立傍正助 — discard-and-establish, accompanying, correct, assisting) doctrinal scheme of the Seizan school through detailed topical headings, each given a concise gloss.

Abstract

The opening entry illustrates the method: “The matter of “Discard-and-Establish, Accompanying, Correct-and-Assisting” (廢立傍正助三重之事): “Discard-and-Establish” means: discard the various practices of disciplined-good and dispersed-good; establish the one practice of nenbutsu…” (廢立傍正助三重之事 / 廢立ト者。廢ハ定散之諸行。立ハ念佛ノ一行也). The body of the text proceeds through enumerated topical headings, with each topical entry giving:

  1. The technical term in Sino-Japanese characters;
  2. A brief etymological / scriptural gloss;
  3. The Seizan-school doctrinal position on the term;
  4. Where relevant, the contrast with the Chinzei or Shinshū reading.

The work is one of the principal pedagogical primers of the Seizan school in the early-modern period and was used in conjunction with KR6t0344 (the underlying daizu diagrams) and with the doctrinal compendia of the Ken’i corpus KR6t0337KR6t0342.

Date. The Taishō text is the Bunka 13 / 1816 woodblock edition prepared by Chōzan 超山 of Saikō-ji 西向寺 in west Kyoto (specifically: “Bunka 13 / Ryūshū / 子 / 8th month, upper-third; reporting-the-grace, the * residence-disciple Chōzan śramaṇa, copied at the eastern-veranda of Saikō-ji of Imazato in west Kyoto”). The underlying composition is undatable from internal evidence; a 15th–17th c. date is plausible.
