Anthology Manifesting the Correct Doctrinal Stream by 眞慧 Shin’e (撰)

About the work

A two-fascicle Shinshū polemical treatise by Shin’e 眞慧 眞慧 (1434–1512), tenth abbot of the Senju-ji 専修寺 of the Takada 高田 branch. The work is the principal Takada-ha doctrinal response to the rapid expansion of Rennyo’s Hongan-ji movement in the late 15th c. and aims to demonstrate that the Takada-ha, not Rennyo’s Hongan-ji, is the legitimate doctrinal heir of Shinran.

Abstract

The treatise argues, point by point, that the Takada-ha preserves Shinran’s authentic doctrinal positions against the Hongan-ji’s late-medieval innovations. Among the key points: (1) the anjin-ketsujō doctrine in its classical Shinran formulation (with explicit reference to Shinran’s own letters and the Kyōgyōshinshō); (2) the practical rather than scholastic orientation of Shinshū teaching (against what the Takada-ha sees as the over-systematization of doctrine by Kakunyo and his successors); (3) the direct transmission Shinran → Shinbutsu 真佛 → Kenchi → … → Shin’e (against the Hongan-ji’s Shinran → Nyoshin → Kakunyo line).

The work circulated as the official Takada-ha doctrinal position for the Sengoku and early Edo periods. Shin’e contended actively with Rennyo through the 1470s–80s and the Kenshō ryūgishō is the most substantive surviving piece of that doctrinal contestation. The two abbots eventually achieved a modus vivendi, but the Takada-ha remained doctrinally distinct from the Hongan-ji throughout the Edo and modern periods, and the Kenshō ryūgishō is the foundation text of that distinction.

Date. Composition is generally placed in Shin’e’s middle-to-late career, c. 1470–1510; the work was certainly complete before Shin’e’s death in Eishō 9 / 1512.
