About the work
Nāgārjuna’s prose auto-commentary (svopajña-vṛtti) on the verse-treatise Yīnyuán xīn lùn sòng (KR6v0033). The commentary expounds the yuán-qǐ 緣起 (dependent origination) doctrine in Madhyamaka kōng-zōng 空宗 framework, addressing the implications for yīn-guǒ-lùn 因果論 (theory of causation).
Abstract
Like the verses, the Vṛtti was lost from the Chinese tradition and recovered from Dūnhuáng. The Taishō text (T32 no. 1654) was set from S. 1358 + S. 2462 with many errors. Huá Fāngtián’s 1996 edition draws on eight Dūnhuáng witnesses (Beijing Library Běi 7257 [海 17] = base text; S. 4235, Běi 7255 [官 68], P. 4645, S. 1358, S. 2462, S. 1513 verso, Bĕi-dà 北大 D096) and is fully cross-collated with the verses (KR6v0033) and the secondary commentary (KR6v0035).
