Nakao Manzō 中尾萬三 (Chinese: Zhōngwěi Wànsān, 1879–1947), important early-Shōwa Japanese pharmacist, pharmacologist, and historian of East Asian pharmacology. Professor at Mitsui Memorial Hospital (三井記念病院) and later affiliated with the Manshū igaku (滿洲醫學) research institutes. Combined laboratory pharmacology with serious philological-historical scholarship on the Chinese pharmacopoeia tradition; his Chūgokuyaku hyakushu no kagaku jikken 中國藥一百種之化學實驗 (KR3ec083) is the principal Japanese chemical-analytical survey of major Chinese drugs of the 1920s–30s. Nakao also published important historical-pharmacological studies, including monographs on the Shénnóng běncǎo jīng tradition, the medieval Japanese honzō wamyō, and the materia medica of the Shōsōin imperial repository.
