Rényǒng 仁勇
Línjì-school Chán monk of the Northern Sòng, dharma-heir of 方會 Yángqí Fānghuì (992–1049), styled Bǎoníng Rényǒng 保寧仁勇 after his abbacy at Bǎoníng chányuàn 保寧禪院 in Jiāngníng fǔ 江寧府 (present-day Nánjīng). Native of Míngzhōu 明州 (Sìmíng 四明; present-day Níngbō), lay surname Zhú 竺. Exact lifedates not transmitted; on the basis of his teacher’s life and his subsequent study with Bǎiyún Shǒuduān 白雲守端 (1025–1072), his active career falls in the middle and late eleventh century.
Ordained young in the Tiāntái Buddhist tradition; subsequently turned to Chán, first calling on Xuědòu Míngjué 雪竇明覺 (who, according to the Xùchuán dēng lù, dismissed him with a barbed remark that drove him to double down on his Chán study). After years at Lètán 泐潭 he encountered Yángqí Fānghuì shortly after the latter’s move to Yúngài shān, and achieved a sudden awakening at the first exchange. After Fānghuì’s death he continued to study with the senior dharma-brother Bǎiyún Shǒuduān. Taught two separate terms at Bǎoníng, where he died.
Compiled (biān 編) the Yángqí Fānghuì héshàng yǔlù 楊岐方會和尚語錄 (KR6q0056), the canonical recorded-sayings collection of his teacher. Dharma-heirs include Shàngfāng Rìyì 上方日益, Jǐngfú Rìyú 景福日餘, and Yuèzhǎng Zhīyuān 月掌知淵.
