Northern Sòng Huáyán-and-Tiāntái scholar-monk, native of Jìnyún 縉雲 county in Chǔzhōu 處州 (modern Zhèjiāng); commonly designated by his place of origin as “Jìnyún” 縉雲. Disciple of the leading Northern Sòng Huáyán master Chángshuǐ Zǐxuán 長水子璿 (965–1038). Lifedates unknown; the floruit given here (1030–1060) reflects his attested compositional career, which is anchored by the self-preface to his major work dated Qìnglì 4 (1044).
His scholarly output is described in the DILA Buddhist Studies Person Authority (A000313) as wholeheartedly devoted to scriptural exegesis (傾心經教), thoroughly versed in Tiāntái doctrine (通天台法門), and accomplished in Huáyán scholarship (善賢首之學) — a characteristically Northern Sòng cross-school formation.
Two attested works: (i) the present Bōrě xīnjīng lüèshū xiǎnzhèngjì 般若心經略疏顯正記 (X531 = KR6c0150), a three-fascicle subcommentary on Fǎzàng’s Lüèshū (T1712), with self-preface dated Qìnglì 4 (1044); and (ii) the Yuánjué jīng pèixù chāo 圓覺經裴序鈔 (1 juan, with attached kēwén) — listed in the Xīnbiān zhū zōng jiàozàng zǒnglù 新編諸宗教藏總錄 j. 1 but no longer extant.
He represents the Northern Sòng cross-disciplinary scholastic culture in which Huáyán-school masters routinely incorporated Tiāntái doctrinal materials and vice versa, and he is a witness to the active reception of mid-Tang Huáyán commentaries in mid-Sòng monastic centres.
