Modern Chinese Sanskritist and translator of Indian Buddhist narrative literature. Translator of two avadāna texts in Zàngwài fójiào wénxiàn 藏外佛教文獻 vol. 9 (Beijing: Zōngjiào wénhuà, 2003): the Bǎojì dàwáng púsà běnyuán 寶髻大王菩薩本緣 KR6v0101 from Michael Hahn’s Sanskrit edition of the Mahājjātakamālā (the long Maṇicūḍa-avadāna, 1080 verses, of unknown date and Nepalese provenance), and the Bǎojì běnyuán 寶髻本緣 KR6v0102 from chapter 50 of Kṣemendra’s Bodhisattvāvadānakalpalatā (1052 CE). Both translations represent the first complete renderings of these specific Sanskrit witnesses of the Maṇicūḍa story-cycle into modern Chinese, and were produced as part of Fāng Guǎngchāng’s broader project of recovering Sanskrit Buddhist narrative literature for the Chinese reader.
