Ní Shìyì 倪士毅 (1303–1348), Zhònghóng 仲弘, hào Dàochuān 道川; native of Qímén 祁門 (Huīzhōu, modern Ānhuī). A late-Yuán Confucian scholar in the ZhūXī orthodoxy. His best-known work is the Sì shū jí shì 四書輯釋 — a digest of Zhū Xī commentary on the Sì shū arranged for examination preparation; it became the most-used early Míng Sì shū study aid and was a foundation work of Ní’s contemporary fame. He also wrote the Zuò yì yào jué 作義要訣 (KR4i0049) — a handbook on the writing of the jīngyì 經義 examination essay in the wake of the 1313 Yányòu re-establishment of the Yuán kējǔ — and edited the Lùnyǔ wén shì lèi shì 論語問實類釋 and several lesser study aids. CBDB id 30829 gives 1303–1348. Ní studied under Chén Lì 陳櫟 (a ZhūXī school figure of Huīzhōu) and lived primarily as a private tutor; he never accepted an examination posting himself, which is consistent with his preface to the Zuò yì yào jué, which describes the work as written for “young students taking the new examinations”. The catalog meta gives “fl. 1341”; this is consistent with the date of the preface (1341 fits Ní’s mid-career).
