Chuánshàn 傳善
Mid-seventeenth-century Cáodòng Chán monk, attendant (shìzhě 侍者) of Xuěguān Zhìyín 雪關智誾 (1585–1637) during Zhìyín’s final year. Fǎhuì (full form) Chéngluán 成巒 in the Shòu-chāng-line lineage-poem; Chuánshàn 傳善 presumably is a zì or secondary name, since the 1656 postface signs as 侍者傳善 while the 13-juan recension juan-head reads shìzhě Chéngluán Chuánshàn lù 侍者成巒傳善錄.
Dual editorial role on the Zhìyín yǔlù corpus. Chuánshàn appears in two Jiāxīng Canon texts:
- As head recorder (lù 錄) of KR6q0418 《雪關禪師語錄》 (J27 B198, 13 juan) — co-signed with the later editor 開詗 Kāixuàn. Here his full form Chéngluán Chuánshàn is used.
- As the sole compiler-editor (jí 輯) of KR6q0419 《雪關和尚語錄》 (J27 B199, 6 juan) — signed simply Chuánshàn in the hòubá 跋 dated 丙申仲春中浣 = Shùnzhì 13 / 1656 2nd lunar month middle decade.
Attendance biography (from KR6q0419 hòubá). Bǐngzǐ dōng 丙子冬 (= 1636 winter): Chuánshàn “emerged from the mountains” (chūlǐng 出嶺) to serve at Zhìyín’s side. Attended Zhìyín for “yī hánshǔ 一寒暑” (one season) before the master’s 1637.10.11 death — i.e., winter 1636 through autumn-winter 1637, approximately 11 months. At that time noted the yǔlù manuscripts “sǎnmàn 散漫” (scattered) and formed the intention of editing them. Wùzǐ chūn 戊子春 (= 1648 spring): learned that the Bóshān 經房 scripture-hall had burned down (“lí huílù, bǎn jìn huà yú huījìn 罹回祿板盡化于灰燼”) with the master’s woodblocks destroyed. Waited nine years (“zhì jīn jiǔ zǎi wèi yǒu xiūfù 至今九載未有修復”) for institutional repair; then in 1656 undertook the independent 6-juan reconstruction.
A significant figure for Chán textual-critical history: Chuánshàn’s 1656 reconstruction preserves a distinct editorial witness to Zhìyín’s yǔlù that complements the broader KR6q0418 recension. His “one season at the master’s side” self-statement makes explicit that the 1656 reconstruction was necessarily based on documentary rather than primarily personal-memorial resources — a methodological datum for how Chán attendant-recorders worked with scattered post-mortem manuscript traditions.
