Sēngyuǎn 僧遠 (Língshù Yuǎn 靈樹遠)

Early-Qīng LínjìYángqí Chán master in the Sānfēngpài 三峰派 lineage (i.e., descendants of Hànyuè Fǎzàng 漢月法藏 who were later officially suppressed by the Yōngzhèng emperor’s 1733 Jiǎn mó biàn yì lù). Yíngfāng 鎣方; also Língyán Yíngfāng Yuǎn 靈巖鎣方遠 (for his Língyánsì 靈巖寺 affiliation) and Língshù Yuǎn 靈樹遠 (for his later Língshùsì 靈樹寺 abbacy). Native of Chángzhōu 長洲 (Sūzhōu region, Jiāngsū). Lifedates unrecorded; active mid-to-late 17th century.

Dharma-heir of Tuìwēng Hóngchú 退翁弘儲 (1605–1672; grand-dharma-heir of Fǎzàng), placing him at the third generation of the Sānfēngpài lineage.

Known for attaining awakening despite chronic illness (sù yǒu léi jí 素有贏疾 “long suffered from frailty”): per the preface to his yǔlù, he pledged to Hóngchú that “hearing it in the morning and dying in the evening would be without regret” (zhāo wén xī sǐ wú hàn 朝聞夕死無憾), and subsequently attained awakening under his master’s teaching.

Surviving work: the Língshù Yuǎn chánshī Yúnyán jí 靈樹遠禪師雲嵒集 KR6q0220 — his collected Chán sermons, compiled by his disciple Guǎngréng 廣仍. Part of the same Sānfēngpài teaching-community that produced the nuns’ Sòng gǔ hé xiǎng jí KR6q0204.
