Yuán Tǒng 元統 (early Míng; fl. 1380s, native of Lèpíng 樂平 in Jiāngxī by some accounts) was the first head of the imperial Astronomical Bureau (Tàishǐ lìng 太史令) of the Míng dynasty under Hóngwǔ. He directed the Míng adoption of the Yuán Shòushí lì 授時曆 of 郭守敬 (1281) — re-promulgated under the Míng with minor amendments as the Dàtǒng lì 大統曆 (1384), the Hóngwǔ 17 standard calendar of the dynasty. To support its operational use he compiled the Dàtǒng lìshū tōngguǐ 大統曆書通軌, a set of canonical “running-track” calculation manuals: Jiāoshí tōngguǐ 交食通軌 (eclipses-in-general), Rìshí tōngguǐ 日食通軌 (solar eclipse), Yuèshí tōngguǐ 月食通軌 (lunar eclipse), Sìyú tōngguǐ 四余通軌 (the four supplementary “balanced” terms — 紫氣, 月孛, 羅睺, 計都), and Wǔxīng tōngguǐ 五星通軌 (five planets) — the set transmitted in the catalog as KR3fa017. The catalog field “正元统” appears to be a textual corruption of his name; the standard form is 元統. CBDB has no entry.
