Hánkě 函可 (also written 圅可), Zǔxīn 祖心, biéhào Shèngrén 剩人 (“the Survivor / Remaining Man”) — also referred to as Qiānshān Shèngrén 千山剩人 from his place of exile. Cáodòng 34th-generation dharma-heir of Zōngbǎo Dàodú 宗寶道獨 (= 空隱道獨), thus co-disciple (“dharma-elder-brother”) of Tiānrán Hánshì 天然函昰 函昰. Born 1612, died 順治十六年己亥 11/27 = 1660-01-09, age 49, zuòxià 20. Native of Huìzhōu Bóluó 惠州博羅 (Guǎngdōng); lay surname Hán 韓.

Formation. Met Kōngyǐn Dàodú 空隱道獨 at Guǎngzhōu Dōngguān 廣州東官; given the Zhàozhōu wúzì 趙州無字 gōngàn. After two years’ work, broke through on the kānpò pózǐ (婆子) story. Tonsured in 廬山 in 崇禎十二年六月十九日 = 1639-07-19, age 29 — accompanied his co-disciple Tiānrán.

Exile and the Liáoyáng abbacies. A Míng loyalist; arrested in 1647 in Nánjīng for carrying drafts of his secret history of the dynastic fall (Zài biàn jì 再變紀). The Qīng court in 順治 spared his life but exiled him to Shēnyáng / Liáoyáng 盛京瀋陽 (Mukden, in Manchuria), where he became the founding figure of Buddhism in the Liáodōng frontier. Held seven abbacies, all in the Yīwūlǘshān 醫巫閭山 / Qiānshān 千山 region: Pǔjì 普濟, Guǎngcí 廣慈, Dàníng 大寧, Yǒngān 永安, Cíháng 慈航, Jiēyǐn 接引, and Xiànghuà 向化, drawing congregations of 500–700.

Major dharma-heirs. Jīnfāng 今方, Jīnxiū 今羞 今羞, Jīnhé 今何, Jīnyǎn 今衍, Jīnxī 今希, Jīnzǐ 今子, Jīnfǎng 今仿, Jīnshī 今獅, Jīnyù 今育, plus the lay-tonsured Jīnlú 今盧 今盧 and Jīnyòu 今又 今又 (re-publishers of the yǔlù).

  • KR6q0527 《千山剩人禪師語錄》 6 juan, J38 B407, yǔlù; original “普濟錄” of c. 1654 expanded and re-cut as zhòngzǐ 重梓 in 1690 at Suìchéng Huánghuásì 穗城黃華寺 (Guǎngzhōu) by his lay-tonsured disciples Jīnlú and Jīnyòu, with a preface by 法姪 今辯.
