Liú Zhāo 劉昭
Zì Xuānqīng 宣卿. Native of Píngyuán 平原 (modern Shāndōng). Active in the early Liáng dynasty (early 6th century); held the post of Yǎn xiàn lìng 剡縣令 (magistrate of Yǎn County in Kuàijī 會稽).
His sole transmitted work is the Hòu Hàn shū bǔzhù 後漢書補注 in 180 juǎn (the figure given by the Suí zhì; the work in its complete form has not survived). Of this corpus, only the commentary on the eight zhì of Sīmǎ Biāo 司馬彪’s Xù Hàn shū 續漢書 — 30 juǎn — was extant by Sòng times, and was then attached to Fàn Yè’s Hòu Hànshū (KR2a0009) by Sūn Shì 孫奭’s imperial commission of Qiánxīng 1 (1022) to fill the zhì lacuna in Fàn’s text. Liú Zhāo’s general preface (zǒngxù 總序) to the zhìzhù survives in many editions and is one of the principal early documents of Eastern-Hàn historical bibliography.
His biographical particulars are scant; the Liáng shū / Nán shǐ do not give him a separate biography. The Sìkù tíyào and modern catalog references treat him as a Liáng-era specialist in Eastern-Hàn historiography. CBDB has multiple homonyms; no confident match.
