Liú Bǐng 劉炳 (also written 劉昺, conventionally known by his zì Yànbǐng 彥昺), native of Póyáng 鄱陽 (Jiāngxī). Late-Yuán resistance-band leader: with his younger brother Liú Yù 劉煜 he organised local self-defence against bandits and was a personal client of Yú Què 余闕 at Ānqìng (the Sèmù commander whose suicide-defence of Ānqìng in 1358 was the canonical Yuán-loyalist last stand in Jiāngzhōu). After Yú’s defeat Liú left and took service under the rising Míng. Submitted policy memorial in early Hóngwǔ and was appointed Zhōngshū diǎnqiān 中書典籤; sent out as Dàdūdū fǔ zhǎngjì 大都督府掌記 (with Lǐ Wénzhōng 李文忠 and later Mù Yīng 沐英); then zhīxiàn 知縣 of Dōngē 東阿 in Shāndōng; retired on grounds of illness after two evaluations. His career-chronology is given in Míng shǐ Wényuàn zhuàn (appended to Wáng Miǎn 王冕’s biography); the Jiāngxī tōngzhì’s rival record is rejected by the Sìkù editors. Pupil Liú Zǐshēng 劉子昇 edited his collection KR4e0035 Liú Yànbǐng jí (originally Chūnyǔxuān jí 春雨軒集), with critical comments by Yáng Wéizhēn 楊維楨 and prefaces by Yáng, Wēi Sù 危素, and Sòng Lián 宋濂. CBDB returns many YuánMíng homonyms with no usable dates; lifedates not securely fixed but bracketed c. 1310s–after 1379 from internal evidence in the collection.
