Wànlián 卍蓮
A late-Qīng Tiāntái 天台 monk active in the Wēnzhōu / Lèchéng 樂城 (modern Lèqīng 樂清) region of southeastern Zhèjiāng — the Dōngōu 東甌 region. Religious name Gǔhé 古和; sobriquets Wànlián 卍蓮 and Xiǎoróu 曉柔. He took the tonsure (tìrǎn 薙染) in Dàoguāng 26 autumn (= 1846) and received full ordination (shòujù 受具) in Dàoguāng 27 spring (= 1847); he records additional training through Xiánfēng 4 winter (= 1854) and thereafter some twenty years of practice culminating in the composition of his major work in 1875. He held the lineage of the Tiāntái school (chuán Tiāntái Gǔhé 傳天台古和) but explicitly took the Pure Land as ultimate refuge — a characteristic late-Qīng tāijìng shuāngxiū 台淨雙修 (Tiāntái–Pure Land integration) position.
His major work is the 《淨土證心集》 Jìngtǔ zhèngxīn jí KR6p0115 (X1196) in three juǎn, an integrative Pure Land devotional anthology containing 29 miscellaneous expository pieces, 48 image-encomia, the 108-verse Wéixīn sòng 唯心頌, the 20-stanza Yàoyuē lǜ 要約律, xīnyàn míng 欣厭銘 (acceptance-rejection inscriptions), and jǐngcè jì 警䇿偈 (admonitory gāthās). His studio was the Yuēxī jīngshè 約西精舍.
