Yuán-period 元 Shǎnxī Confucian scholar-official; founding-master of the Lǔzhāi shūyuàn 魯齋書院 (the regional Yuán Confucian academy named for 許衡); architect of the Yuán Crown-Prince’s education under Rénzōng. CBDB 34968 records 1254–1331.
Origins. Originally a Tàiyuán 太原 (modern Shǎnxī) family that relocated to Fèngyuán 奉元 (modern Xīān). At age 13 placed first in the local examination on the Shūjīng.
Career.
- Zhìyuán era: appointed Guózǐ sīyè 國子司業 — declined
- Shǎnxī xíngtái shì yùshǐ Zhào Shìyán 趙世延 requested establishment of the Lǔzhāi shūyuàn; Tóng presided over the teaching
- Yányòu 6 (1319): on the establishment of the Yuán Crown Prince (huáng tàizǐ), summoned as Fèngyì dàfū zuǒ zànshàn 奉議大夫左贊善
- Next year (1320): on Yīngzōng’s succession, returned home on illness
- Zhìhé 1 (1328): appointed Jíxián shìdú xuéshì — again declined

Imperial-archive function. Per Fùzhūlǐ chōng’s shéndào bēi (preserved in the Jǔān jí): in Zhìyuán 31 (1294), participated as biānlù (compiler-recorder) in the gathering of materials for the Khubilai (Shìzǔ) Shílù and Yuánshǐ Shìzǔ běnjì. The Shǎnxī xíngshěng píngzhāng zhèngshì Xiánníngwáng 咸寧王 (who received Khubilai’s posthumous-canonization stele) recruited Tóng for this archive-compilation work.
Poetic-and-prose taste. Per Jiǎ Rén’s xíngzhuàng: loved Lù Yóu 陸放翁; admired Zhōu Bìdà 周益公 in prose.
Sìkù editorial intervention. The Sìkù editors deleted the qírǎng qīngcí (Daoist sacrificial blue-words) from the collection on imperial-instruction-authorized grounds that Tóng’s self-position as míngdào xīngjiào (clarifying-the-way and reviving-the-teaching) Confucian made such pieces inappropriate.
