Xiàng Xiù 向秀

Zǐqī 子期. Wèi-Jìn 魏晉 philosopher, native of Huáinèi Huáixiàn 懷縣 (modern Hénán). One of the “Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove” (Zhúlín qī xián 竹林七賢), close associate of Jī Kāng 嵇康 and Ruǎn Jí 阮籍. Author of a Zhuāngzǐ commentary that was later (according to the Shìshuō xīnyǔ tradition) appropriated and extended by Guō Xiàng 郭象 — the basis for the long-running “plagiarism question” attached to Guō Xiàng’s Zhuāngzǐ zhù. Also wrote a Zhōuyì zhù 周易註, lost as an independent work but cited in 李鼎祚 Lǐ Dǐngzuò’s Zhōuyì jíjiě (KR1a0008). Jìnshū (juan 49) gives his biography.
