Wú Rènchén 吳任臣 (1628?–1689?), Zhìyī 志伊 (also Ěrqì 爾器), of Rénhé 仁和 (modern Hángzhōu, Zhèjiāng). Early-Qīng polymath of unusually broad scholarly interests. He passed the special bóxué hóngcí 博學鴻詞 召試 examination of Kāngxī 康熙 18 (1679) — the early Qīng court’s recruitment of distinguished Hàn-Chinese scholars — and was appointed Hànlínyuàn jiǎntǎo 翰林院檢討. He was a prolific author across history, philology, classical studies, and natural history. His major surviving works include the Shíguó Chūnqiū 十國春秋 KR2i0021 in 114 juàn (the definitive synthesis on the Ten Kingdoms of the Five Dynasties), the Shānhǎijīng guǎngzhù 山海經廣注 KR3l0048 (a major Qing commentary on the Shānhǎi jīng), and the Zìhuì bǔ 字彙補 (a supplement to Méi Yīngzuò’s 梅膺祚 Zìhuì). CBDB id 66030 gives 1628–1689 with question-marks (the conventional dates from Qián Yíjí’s 錢儀吉 Bēizhuàn jí 碑傳集); these are followed by the catalog meta and adopted here. CBDB id 351735 is a separate entry without dates. Wú belonged to the southern Hángzhōu intellectual world that produced 毛奇齡 Máo Qílíng, 朱彝尊 Zhū Yízūn, and 查慎行 Zhā Shènxíng; he and Zhū Yízūn corresponded extensively.
