Zhōu Mì 周密 (1232–1298), zì Gōngjǐn 公謹, hào Cǎochuāng 草窗, also Píngzhōu 蘋洲 and Biànyáng lǎorén 弁陽老人. Native of Jǐnán 濟南 by descent; the family had moved south with Gāozōng’s crossing and was registered at Húzhōu 湖州 (his great-grandfather settled there). One of the most distinguished Sòng-loyalist (yímín) scholars of the SòngYuán transition. Held office under the late Sòng as Magistrate of Yìwū 義烏 (in Chúnyòu) and other minor posts; after the fall of the Southern Sòng in Déyòu 2 (1276) he refused to serve the Yuán and lived in seclusion at Hángzhōu’s Guǐxīn street, where he produced his best-known works. Author of the Wǔlín jiùshì 武林舊事 (KR2k0119), the Guǐxīn záshí 癸辛雜識 (KR3j0093), the Qídōng yěyǔ 齊東野語 (KR3j0134), the Yúnyān guòyǎn lù 雲煙過眼錄 (an important early connoisseurship treatise), the Hàorán zhāi yǎtán 浩然齋雅談, the Cǎochuāng jí 草窗集, and the major Sòng-loyalist anthologies Juémiào hǎocí 絕妙好詞 (Sòng cí anthology) and Yāng tán 鞅潭. His combined output makes him the principal literary monument to the SòngYuán transition.
