Xiánhuī 咸輝

Southern Sòng Buddhist scholar-monk; native of Mǐn 閩 (Fújiàn). Floruit Qiándào period (mid-twelfth century); compiler of the Shǒulèngyánjīng yìhǎi 首楞嚴經義海 (KR6j0727) — a thirty-fascicle compilation that arranges the running commentary of the Táng monk Huáidí 懷迪 (the Tang-period co-translator-collator of the Lèngyán) together with later Tang-Sòng exegetical materials, organizing each phrase of the sūtra under its accumulated commentarial layers (páijīng rùzhù 排經入注). The work was prefaced by the cānzhīzhèngshì 參知政事 of the Sòng court on Qiándào 8.11.15 (15 December 1172). The compilation was undertaken at the Gūsū Dìnghuìsì 姑蘇定慧寺 in Sūzhōu, where Xiánhuī solicited patronage to cut blocks for printing.

The preface describes Xiánhuī as having “kept in mind the entrustment of the Buddhas and Patriarchs, lamenting the decay of the Dharma-way, devoting his energies — beyond his Chán practice — to gathering many books and bringing them to a complete major work.” Lifedates and biographical particulars are otherwise not recorded.
