Yáotǐng 堯挺
Late-Wànlì period lay-Buddhist scholar; full lay name Shī Yáotǐng 施堯挺. Native of Mǐn 閩 (Fújiàn). Lifedates not preserved; floruit Wànlì 40s (1610s).
Author of the Zhǔntí xīnyào 準提心要 (KR6j0751, X59 no. 1078), a one-fascicle lay-Buddhist devotional handbook on the Cuṇḍā 準提 dhāraṇī practice. The work is signed Mǐnzhōng Fó dìzǐ Shī Yáotǐng xūnmù bàizàn 閩中佛弟子施堯挺薰沐拜讚 (“Buddhist disciple of Mǐn, Shī Yáotǐng, having ritually bathed and bowed in praise”). The principal preface is dated Tiānyùn rénzǐ 壬子, zhǎngzhì rì 長至日 = winter solstice 1612 (i.e., the Wànlì 40 winter solstice). A supplementary editorial note records additional revisions in Tiānyùn guǐchǒu 癸丑 = 1613.
Yáotǐng’s Xīnyào belongs to the cluster of late-Wànlì lay-Buddhist Cuṇḍā dhāraṇī manuals (with 謝于教’s Zhǔntí jìngyè KR6j0750) that document the period’s substantial Esoteric–Pure-Land devotional revival.
