Yuán-dynasty Línjìzōng 臨濟宗 Yángqí 楊岐 branch Chán master, abbot of Jīnshān 金山 (Zǐjīn shān 紫金山) monastery in Zhènjiāng 鎮江 (= Rùnzhōu 潤州). Dharma-heir of Jìngshān Hǔyán Jìngfú chánshī 徑山虎巖淨伏禪師 (Hǔyán Jìngfú 淨伏, A001099). His lineage thus goes back through the Jìngshān line of the Yángqí school. Birth year derivable from the colophon to his Shíyí jí (KR6q0341), which identifies him as “the 82-year-old of Zǐjīn shān” in spring 1350 — thus b. 1269; death year uncertain but after 1350. His yǔlù circulates as Jīnshān Jíxiū Qìliǎo chánshī yǔlù (X71 no. 1407); the present Shíyí jí (KR6q0341) is the supplementary miscellany compiled by his Japanese disciple 周及 Gucho Shūkyū before the latter’s return to Japan in 1351. Qìliǎo’s career was spent at Jīnshān, which was repeatedly destroyed by fire in the Yuán and which he rebuilt with imperial support in the 1340s — a major theme of the Shíyí prose pieces.
