Miàodào 妙道
Yuán Yángqí-branch Línjì Chán master, hào Zhúyuán 竺原 (also written 竺元). Native of Nínghǎi 寧海 (Táizhōu), lay surname Chén 陳; dharma-heir of 如珙 Héngchuān Rúgǒng (1222–1289, KR6q0344) and thus one of the three principal heirs (with 清茂 Gǔlín Qīngmào and Duànjiāng 覺恩 Juéēn) who carried the Héngchuān line forward. Abbot of Kūnshān Jiànyánsì 崑山薦嚴寺 at Zǐtuòshān 紫籜山 in Táizhōu, under which seat he received 無慍 Shùzhōng Wúyùn as student and, at their first meeting, broke Wúyùn through with a single shout on the wúzì huàtóu — the moment famously recalled in Wúyùn’s yǔlù (KR6q0349). Died in the 5th year of Zhìzhèng (1345), aged 89, per the Yíniánlù 疑年錄. Dharma-heirs include 無慍 Wúyùn and Wéiyī 惟一 (DILA A019790).
