Sūn Wǔ 孫武 (conventional dates ca. 544–496 BCE), zì Chángqīng 長卿, was a Warring-States-era (the catalog’s Zhōu attribution covers the Chūnqiū / Warring States period) military strategist and the traditional author of the Sūnzǐ bīng fǎ 孫子兵法 (KR3b0003) — the foundational Chinese military classic. According to the Shǐjì (j. 65), he served Hélǘ 闔閭 of Wú in the late 6th c. BCE. The historical Sūn Wǔ is shadowy; some scholars (Yáng Shànqún 楊善群 and others) hold that the historical figure is fundamentally distinct from the Sūn Bìn 孫臏 author of the parallel Sūn Bìn bīngfǎ (recovered at Yínquèshān, 1972). The catalog gives fl. -380 to -320; the Yínquèshān bamboo strips and modern critical scholarship support a slightly earlier Chūnqiū dating (ca. 544–496 BCE) for the historical figure, with the Sūnzǐ bīngfǎ itself completed roughly 5th c. BCE. CBDB has 孫武 (id 34214) without dates.
