Mid-Táng 唐 Daoist scholar-official, active c. 736. Jiàn yì dà fū 諫議大夫 (“Admonition Counsellor”) and guàn zhǔ 觀主 (abbot) of the Sū míng guàn 肅明觀 — one of the major Daoist court-temples of early-mid Táng Cháng’ān.

Works. Yǐn Yīn’s principal attested works:

  1. Lǎozǐ xīn yì 老子新義 (“New Meanings of the Lǎozǐ”) in 15 juàn — a substantial Dàodé jīng commentary, now lost apart from fragments. Listed in the Wài zhuàn bibliography of KR5c0062 DZ 679 among the 62 pre-Xuánzōng commentators.

  2. [[KR5c0159|Lǎozǐ shuō wǔ chú jīng zhù]] 老子說五廚經註 (DZ 763, 736) — commentary on the Daoist life-nourishing scripture Wǔ chú jīng.

Activity period. 736 (attested). No precise lifedates. The 736 date places Yǐn Yīn at the height of the Táng Daoist imperial project under Xuánzōng — exactly contemporary with Xuánzōng’s Dàodé jīng commentary (KR5c0059, 732–735).

Office. Jiàn yì dà fū 諫議大夫 (Admonition Counsellor) was a mid-to-high rank court office in the early Táng; combined with his guàn zhǔ role at the Sū míng guàn, Yǐn Yīn was clearly a prominent Daoist figure at the Xuánzōng court.
