Tú Wényī 屠文漪
Style name Chúnzhōu 蒓洲. Native of Sōngjiāng 松江 (in modern Shànghǎi). Birth and death years not securely recorded; flourished in the early-to-mid Kāngxī period (active c. 1680–1720).
A Kāngxī-period mathematical-pedagogical compiler, contemporary with 杜知耕 Dù Zhīgēng. His sole Sìkù-preserved work is the Jiǔzhāng lùyào 九章錄要 (KR3f0056) in 12 juàn — a re-organization of the Jiǔzhāng tradition with imported Western methods, parallel-and-comparable to Dù Zhīgēng’s KR3f0050 Shùxué yào but with different emphasis (Tú Wényī more thorough on Gōugǔ, less so on Fāngtián; more thorough on Shǎoguǎng edge-and-corner relations, less so on solid-geometry).
The Sìkù 提要 of KR3f0056 notes that Tú Wényī’s work introduces a method called jièzhēng 借徵 (borrowing-evidence), equivalent to the jiècuī diéjiè (borrowing-decreasing iterated-borrowing) method — a method not addressed in 杜知耕 Dù Zhīgēng’s parallel work. The 提要: “although [Tú Wényī’s exposition of jièzhēng] is not extremely refined-and-dense, on the cleverness of borrowing-numbers [he] has fundamentally obtained the great essentials”.
