Nara-period Japanese Hossō 法相 monk, conventionally dated to the eighth century. Hōbōgirin (TP entry for HYŌBO) places him at Gangō-ji 元興寺 of Nara — one of the principal Hossō centres of the Nara establishment. Compiler of KR6i0320 Zuìshèngwáng jīng yǔzú 最勝王經羽足 (T2198), a one-fascicle Hossō commentary on Yìjìng’s translation of the Suvarṇaprabhāsa-sūtra (KR6i0303 = T665). Within that work the editorial voice refers to “Master Byō” 備師 in the third person, suggesting that the surviving Taishō recension may be an excerpting / abridging redaction of a longer Byōbi commentary rather than Byōbi’s autograph.

Native place, lay surname, exact lifedates, and teacher-affiliation are not recorded in the standard reference works. Source: DILA Buddhist Person Authority A000235; Hōbōgirin fascicule annexe, TP-entry for HYŌBO (after Hokke-kō shoshō V); Bussho kaisetsu daijiten 佛書解説大辭典 (Mochizuki).
