Fùlǐ 復禮, Tang Buddhist scholar-monk; lifedates not transmitted; floruit late 7th c. Native of Jīngzhàofǔ 京兆府 (the metropolitan region around Cháng’ān), secular surname Huángfǔ 皇甫. Resident at Xìngshànsì 興善寺 in Cháng’ān.
He served as brush-holder (執筆 zhí-bǐ — i.e., the editorial-stylistic refiner of the Chinese rendering) for the principal Wǔ Zé-tiān-era translation projects: the Dà-zhuāng-yán 大莊嚴 / Mahāvyūha-sūtra under Dì-pó-hē-luó 地婆訶羅 (Divākara, 613–687); the Huá-yán 華嚴 / Avataṃsaka under Shí-chā-nán-tuó 實叉難陀 (Śikṣānanda, 652–710); and others. The Sòng gāo-sēng zhuàn j. 4 records: “綴文裁義實屬斯人” — “of the gathering and refining of the literary form, the master of the work was indeed this person.”
His sole substantial Kanripo work is the 《十門辯惑論》 Shímén biànhuò lùn (KR6r0144, T2111, 3 juan, Yǒnglóng 2 = 681) — a Buddhist apologetic answering 20 questions posed by the imperial Tàizǐ wénxué Quán Wúèr 太子文學權無二, structured as 10 successive question-and-answer “gates.” The work is unique among major Tang apologetics in being designed specifically for the secular-Confucian rather than the Buddhist-Daoist debate.
