Dékǎi 德楷, zì Bǎishān 柏山 (“Cypress Mountain”); often referred to as Bǎishān Dékǎi 柏山德楷. Cáodòng-school 31st-generation dharma-heir of Zhúlàng 竹浪和尚 (i.e. Zhúlàng Tōngér 竹浪通爾, Cáodòng) at Juéhuá 覺華. Born 1629 (estimated); died 康熙壬午三月廿二日 = 1702-04-19, age 74, sēnglà 42. Native of Wéiyáng Tàixìng 維揚泰興 (Yángzhōu region); lay surname Zhuāng 莊.
Formation. From infancy showed Buddhist disposition: clasped his hands at Buddha-images, retched at smell of meat or wine, loved sitting in fúzuò. At 11 his father died, and he resolved on monasticism. Visited Juéhuá 覺華 to study zàishì (lay-style) cānchán under Zhúlàng for years. To “leave the burning house” (出火宅), at 32 took tonsure under Zhúlàng. Took full ordination at Hánjiāng Tiānníngsì 邗江天寧寺. Sequential cān-fǎng under Bīnyǐn 彬隱, Língyǐn Jùzǔ 靈隱具祖, Chénxiān 塵仙 — at the guòtáng meal-hall, seeing a rice-ladle drop and bounce twice, suddenly grasped the xuányào (mysterious-essential) zhǐ. Returned to Juéhuá and reported to Juélàng 覺浪禪師 (the lineage-name “Juélàng” of his teacher’s continuation), receiving final fùfǎ.
Abbacies (three Shānxī sites). Shānxī Fēnzhōufǔ Fēnyángxiàn Pǔtōng chánsì 山西汾州府汾陽縣普通禪寺; Báiyún chánsì 白雲禪寺; Fēnzhōufǔ Xiàoyìxiàn Lóngshān Huáyán chányuàn 汾州府孝義縣龍山華嚴禪院 (the title-seat — Cáodòng 31-generation throne).
