Dézhēn 德真

A late-Qián-lóng / Jiā-qìng-era Línjì 臨濟 Chán master, abbot of Fǎzhuàngshān 法幢山. Hào Xūzhōu 虛舟 (“Empty-Boat”), conventionally cited as Fǎzhuàngshān Xūzhōu zhǎnglǎo 法幢山虛舟長老. According to his own zìxù of the 《淨土紺珠》 Jìngtǔ gànzhū KR6p0121 (X1202), composed at Fǎzhuàng in jǐmǎo (most plausibly 1819 = Jiāqìng 24), he had by that point been teaching the Línjì doctrine for some forty-plus years (sìshí yú nián fǎyán xióngtú 四十餘年法筵雄徒); his Pure Land turn is presented as a pastoral response to the mòfǎ 末法 condition of declining capacities. The Jìngtǔ gànzhū — a single-juǎn numerically-organised Pure Land doctrinal anthology — is his principal extant work. Lifedates and other biographical details not preserved.
