Huáiyuǎn 懷遠 — Northern-Sòng Buddhist monk, disciple of the Sòng HuáyánChán master Chángshuǐ Zǐxuán 長水子璿 (子璿, 965 – 1038). Lifedates unrecorded.
His sole transmitted work is the Lèngyán-jīng yì-shū shìyào chāo 楞嚴經義疏釋要鈔 in 6 fascicles (KR6j0675, X11 no. 267), a sub-commentary that distills and elucidates the “essential meanings” (shìyào 釋要) of his teacher’s Yì-shū (KR6j0673, the Sòng-Huá-yán Lèngyán commentary). The preface explains the work’s genesis: Zǐ-xuán’s Yì-shū had circulated for some decades but no sub-commentary (chāo 鈔) had yet been composed; Huáiyuǎn’s fellow-disciples pressed him to provide one for pedagogical use (“from the master, [the meaning] is illuminated; from us, it is yet obscure” 於師雖明於某猶昧). The preface is dated Jiā-yòu xīn-chǒu (the 6th cyclical year of the Jiā-yòu era) = the 15th day of the 10th month, 1061 CE (時鉅宋四葉嘉祐辛丑十月望日序). The work is one of the foundational documents of the Northern-Sòng Huá-yán-school reading of the Śūraṃgama-sūtra.
