Chéngshí 成時 / Jiānmì Chéngshí 堅密成時 (1618–1678)
A leading late-Míng / early-Qīng Pure Land master, dharma heir of 智旭 Ǒuyì Zhìxù 蕅益智旭 (1599–1655) — one of the Four Great Monks of the Late Míng — and the principal editor and transmitter of Ǒuyì’s literary corpus. Hào Jiānmì 堅密 (“Firm-and-Dense”). His mature life spans the MíngQīng transition; he carried the Ǒuyì line through the political collapse of the Míng establishment into the early Qīng and was instrumental in the institutional consolidation of late-imperial Pure Land Buddhism.
His major editorial work is the 《淨土十要》 Jìngtǔ shíyào KR6p0067 (X1164, 10 juǎn) — the definitive late-imperial Pure Land anthology, a curated selection of ten essential Pure Land texts (the “Ten Essentials”) originally identified by his master Ǒuyì Zhìxù, with Chéngshí’s editorial annotations (píngdiǎn 評點) and abridgement (jiéyào 節要). The Shíyào became the standard reading list of Pure Land doctrinal study in the Qīng dynasty and remains in active use in contemporary Chinese Pure Land circles. He also produced the Jiānmì lǎorén yíshū 堅密老人遺書 (his own collected writings) and various supplementary editions of Ǒuyì’s works.
