Wénkāng 文康

Late-Yuán / early-Míng Yángqí-branch Línjì Chán master, hào Mùān 穆菴. Native of Cíxī 慈溪 (Míngzhōu). Principal dharma-heir of 清欲 Liǎoān Qīngyù (1292–1367, KR6q0347), within which he is named in the third-generation line from 如珙 Héngchuān Rúgǒng through 清茂 Gǔlín Qīngmào. Co-edited juan 2 (Jiāxīng Běnjué ) of his master’s yǔlù; his own one-juan yǔlù survives as Mùān Wénkāng chánshī yǔlù 穆菴文康禪師語錄 (KR6q0348; X71 n1415), compiled by his dharma-heir 清逸.

Held three successive abbacies per DILA: Tiāntáishān Míngyán Dàfàn chánsì 天台山明巖大梵禪寺 (from Zhìzhèng 17 / Dīngyǒu 丁酉 1357), Hángzhōu Lónghuá Bǎochéng chánsì 龍華寶乘禪寺 (from Zhìzhèng 24 / Jiǎchén 甲辰 1364), and Zhènjiāng Jīnshān Lóngyóu chánsì 金山龍游禪寺 (from Hóngwǔ 7 / Jiǎyín 甲寅 1374). It was at Wénkāng’s repeated request that Sòng Lián 宋濂 finally drafted Qīngyù’s xíngdàojì in 1370; in the Xíngdàojì Sòng Lián describes Wénkāng as “his chief dharma-heir who had been entrusted to receive [the master’s] dharma.” Lifedates unrecorded; his sole recorded dharma-heir was Qīngyì 清逸.
