Northern-Sòng Buddhist scholar-monk active in the third quarter of the eleventh century at the Pǔjìng Monastery 普靜寺 at Zháxī 霅谿 (the area around the Tàihú lake in modern Zhèjiāng). The colophon of his [[KR6i0371|Lánpén shūchāo yúyì 蘭盆疏鈔餘義]] (X376) describes him as “門人霅谿普靜寺賜紫日新隨聽次錄” — “the disciple Rìxīn, granted purple, of Pǔjìng Monastery at Zháxī, recorded these notes in the order in which he heard them lectured.” The grant of the purple robe (cì zǐ 賜紫) marks him as a Sòng-imperial-recognized scholar-monk; “suítīng cì lù” 隨聽次錄 (“recorded as heard, in lecture order”) gives the original genre of his work as auditor’s lecture-notes.
日新’s preserved text is dated by its own colophon to Xīníng 1 (1068) — “時熙寧元年歲次戊申六月望日啟講，七月十有二日徹廗” (“on the full-moon day of the sixth month of the wùshēn year, Xīníng 1, the lectures were inaugurated, and on the twelfth day of the seventh month they were concluded”). The work is a yúyì 餘義 (“residual matters”) sub-commentary on the Yúlánpén commentarial cluster.
