Nara-to-early-Heian-era Japanese Hossō 法相 monk. Hōbōgirin TP595 (after Hokke-kō shoshō IV) places him at Tōdai-ji 東大寺 of Nara — the imperial Hossō-Kegon centre — where he is associated with the late-Nara consolidation of the Hossō (East Asian Yogācāra) tradition. His dates are conventionally given as 728–798 in Japanese reference works, though direct primary documentation is sparse and the dates carry some uncertainty.

Two works survive securely under his name in the East Asian canon:

  • KR6d0034 Fǎhuá lüèchāo 法華略抄 (T2188) — a brief excerpting commentary on the Lotus Sūtra.
  • KR6i0319 Jīnguāngmíng zuìshèngwáng jīng zhùshì 金光明最勝王經註釋 (T2197) — a ten-fascicle annotated commentary on the Suvarṇaprabhāsa-sūtra (Yìjìng recension, T665), compiled mainly from the shū (疏) of the Tang Hossō master Huìzhāo 惠沼 (651–714) with supplementary materials from Shèngzhuāng 勝莊 of Da-jianfu-si and Kyŏnghŭng 憬興 of Silla.
