Kūkoku Myōō 空谷明應 (Karyaku 3 → 1328; Ōei 14 / 1407-08-29), Late-Nanbokuchō / early-Muromachi Japanese Rinzai-Zen master. Style-name (字) Kūkoku 空谷; dharma-name Myōō 明應. Posthumous title Butsunichi Jōkō Kokushi 佛日常光國師, conferred by Emperor Go-Komatsu 後小松天皇 in 1408. Native of Iyo 伊予 province (modern Ehime). Tonsured under 夢窓疎石 Musō Soseki at Rinsen-ji 臨川寺; received transmission from Mukyoku Shigen 無極志玄 (1282–1359, the second-generation abbot of Tenryū-ji and posthumous Bùtsu-ji Zenji 佛慈禪師, also a Musō dharma-heir). Founder (開山) of Tenpuku-ji 天福禪寺 at Mount Shōkaku-zan 正覺山 in Mino 美濃 province (modern Gifu), which he entered Eiwa 1 / 12 / 5 (= 1376-01-26 NS), and successively abbot of Tenryū-ji 天龍寺 and Nanzen-ji 南禪寺. A leading second-generation Musō-line Gozan abbot.
