Pǔtài 普泰

Mid-Míng-period Buddhist scholar-monk, fl. early sixteenth century, principal author of KR6n0097 Dàshèng bǎifǎ míngmén lùn jiě 大乘百法明門論解 (T44n1836) — strictly speaking the zēngxiū 增修 / “expansion-revision” of the lost Tang commentary attributed to 窺基 (Kuījī). The catalog formula records: “Tang Kuījī notes-and-explanation; Ming Pǔtài expansion-revision” (唐窺基 註解 / 明普泰 增修). Pǔtài’s contribution is in fact the bulk of the surviving text: he reconstituted Kuījī’s commentary from various source materials and supplied new exegesis where the Tang sources were lacking.

Pǔtài is a representative figure of the Mid-Míng partial Yogācāra revival that preceded the better-known late-Míng / early-Qīng revival of 袾宏, 智旭, 明昱 and others. The Bǎifǎ míngmén lùn jiě served as the principal Míng-period textbook of the Yogācāra abhidharma and circulated widely.

Lifedates not preserved; floruit early-to-mid Míng inferred from internal evidence and from his attribution by Sì kù quán shū zǒng mù tí yào and the Buddhist bibliographic catalogs.
