Pǔzhuāng 普莊

Late-Yuán / early-Míng Yángqí-branch Línjì Chán master, Jìngzhōng 敬中, hào Dāiān 呆菴 (also 敬菴). 60th列祖 of Jìngshān (in the Xīngshèng Wànshòu chánsì 徑山興聖萬壽禪寺 abbot-list). Native of Xiānjū 仙居, lay surname Yuán 袁; his mother is said to have dreamt of an Indian monk entering her chamber before his birth.

Born on the 12th of the 8th month of Zhì-zhèng 7 (25 September 1347; DILA conventionally dates the year 至正丙戌 given in the tǎ-míng, which is Zhì-zhèng 6 / 1346 by the cycle, to 1347 — one of the standard textual cruxes). Sought ordination at twelve; was taken to Tiān-tóng-sì through a paternal-uncle and entrusted to Zuǒ-ān Yuán-liáng 左菴原良 禪師, under whom he was formally tonsured in Zhì-zhèng 19 (1359) aged thirteen. Unable to settle the great matter there, he went to Tiān-níng chán-sì 天寧禪寺 to meet 惟一 Liǎo-táng Wéi-yī 了堂惟一 — and attained awakening when, trying to speak on the tíng-qián bǎi-shù-zǐ 庭前柏樹子 huà-tóu, Wéi-yī struck him directly across the mouth. He returned to Tiān-tóng to serve Zuǒ-ān as diǎn-zàng-yào 典藏鑰, then — in Hóng-wǔ 10 (1377), after the Míng court issued an edict calling all monks to teach the Heart, Laṅkāvatāra, and Diamond sūtras — was engaged by Xìng-yuán Huì-míng 性原慧明 at Jīn-shān Lóng-yóu-sì to expound these scriptures. His first abbacy came in Hóng-wǔ 12 (1379) at Fǔ-zhōu Běi-chán-sì 撫州北禪寺; from there he moved to Yún-jū Zhēn-rú 雲居真如. In Hóng-wǔ 26 (1393) an imperial edict installed him as 60th abbot of Jìng-shān Xīng-shèng Wàn-shòu. He died on the 23rd of the 10th month of Yǒng-lè 1 (16 November 1403) at the Bù-dòng-xuān 不動軒, shì-shòu 58, sēng-là 45, with the enigmatic parting words “Hard, hard — a sixteen-year-old beauty on a mountain too high for this old monk to carry her up” 難難二八嬌娘上高山老僧扶不得.

As a ménrén 門人 under Wéiyī, co-edited the four-juan Liǎotáng Wéiyī chánshī yǔlù (KR6q0350). His own eight-juan yǔlù survives as Dāiān Pǔzhuāng chánshī yǔlù 呆菴普莊禪師語錄 (KR6q0351, X71 n1418), compiled by his dharma-heir 慧啟 Huìqǐ and others. Principal biographical sources: the tǎmíng in juan 8 of his own yǔlù; Wǔdēng quánshū juan 58; Zēngjí Xùchuándēnglù juan 6.
