Tánzhào 曇照 (lifedates unknown, fl. mid-Northern Sòng), Sòng-dynasty Tiāntāi 天台 monk of the Sìmíng 四明 (Níngbō) establishment, also designated 四明曇照 (“Tánzhào of Sìmíng”) and 方廣曇照 (“Tánzhào of Fāngguǎng[-sì]”). He stands within the lineage of Sìmíng Zhīlǐ 四明知禮 (960–1028) — the dominant Shānjiā 山家 patriarch of the Northern-Sòng Tiāntāi revival.
He is the author of the 《天台智者大師別傳註》 Tiāntāi zhìzhě dàshī biézhuàn zhù (KR6r0069, X77 no. 1535), a 2-juan annotated commentary on Guàndǐng 灌頂’s biography of Zhìyǐ — the Suí Tiāntāi Zhìzhě dàshī biézhuàn (T2050). Tánzhào’s commentary is the principal Sòng exegesis of the Tiāntāi school’s foundation-narrative and the standard SòngTiāntāi reading of Zhìyǐ’s life. Per DILA Buddhist Person Authority A001790.
He is to be distinguished from the Táng monk Báiyún Tánzhào 白雲曇照 (DILA A019938) and from the YuánMíng homonym Tánzhào.
